Meet the Heroes You're Supporting
When you step onto the lot this July, you're doing far more than shopping for a new set of wheels-you're stepping into a century-old promise that no veteran, anywhere, should ever be left behind. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was founded in 1899 to fight for returning service members' pay, health care, and dignity; today it's still the loudest voice on Capitol Hill for veterans' benefits and the nation's largest provider of free VA-claims assistance. Every hometown post -from Alaska to Hawai'i-keeps that mission alive through face-to-face, boots-on-the-ground service.
Here on the Big Island that promise is carried by three tight-knit posts:
- Post 3875 in Hilo helps fund the Heroes & Helpers holiday shopping day, where first responders pair up with nearly 100 local keiki-each given a Target gift card-to make Christmas bright for families who are struggling. The post not only writes the checks; its members volunteer on the sales floor, wrap gifts, and remind every child that their community has their six.
- Post 12122 in Kailua-Kona is home to the LCpl Christopher Camero Memorial, honoring a 19-year-old Marine from Waimea who never made it home from Afghanistan. The Auxiliary runs year-round community-service projects, scholarship drives, and veteran-outreach programs in his name-turning loss into living legacy.
- Post 3830 in Pahoa, affectionately dubbed "the Biggest Little Post in Hawai'i," opens its doors to the entire district with $10 chili-dinner bingo nights and Friday fish fries whose proceeds fund emergency grants for vets facing rent, utility, or medical crises.
Your purchase powers all of that-and more. The $150 we donate for every vehicle sold will:
- Keep the lights on and the doors open at these posts' halls, where PTSD support groups, potlucks, and memorial ceremonies are held weekly.
- Expand emergency-relief funds so a veteran can keep the power on or cover an urgent medical co-pay without choosing between groceries and dignity.
- Put scholarships in local kids' hands through the VFW's Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen contests, giving Big Island students a shot at national awards worth up to $35,000.
- Ship care packages and burial flags, plant cemetery markers, and stage community clean-ups that remind everyone who calls Hawai'i home that service and sacrifice are never forgotten.
So, when you drive away this July-whether it's in a brand-new Ford F-150 or a pre-owned compact-you're not just crossing a purchase off the list. You're putting real dollars into the hands of veterans who once signed a blank check to our country, payable up to and including their lives. That's the power of a single sale. That's the heart of the Salute to Veterans Sales Drive.
